About Brandon Washington's work:
Photo Theme:
The Enduring Pursuit
Photo Story:
It was one of those late August afternoons, the kind where the sun, though still bright, casts long, dramatic shadows that hint at the coming evening. I remember it vividly because I was utterly drained. Exams were looming, and the weight of countless assignments felt like a physical burden on my shoulders. I’d spent hours inside, hunched over textbooks, the fluorescent lights of the library buzzing a monotonous rhythm that did little to soothe my frayed nerves.
I stepped outside for a breath of fresh air, seeking a momentary escape from the academic pressure cooker. The campus was quieter than usual, most students having retreated to their hostels or gone home for the day. As I stood there, the cool breeze a welcome caress against my face, my gaze fell upon the library building. It stood there, imposing yet comforting, bathed in the stark, almost theatrical light of the setting sun. The black and white filter I chose for this photograph wasn't an afterthought; it was an immediate, intuitive decision. It stripped away the distractions of color, allowing the raw essence of the structure to emerge – its lines, its shadows, its quiet strength.
In that moment, the library wasn't just a building filled with books; it was a monument to every late-night study session, every caffeine-fueled cram, every moment of frustration and every flash of understanding. It represented the collective struggle and triumph of thousands of students who had passed through its doors, each seeking knowledge, each pursuing their own version of success. The bare branches of the tree in the foreground, stark against the sky, felt symbolic too – like the skeletal framework of knowledge, waiting for new leaves, new ideas, to blossom with each passing academic year.
I took the shot not just to capture the building, but to capture that feeling: the quiet determination, the relentless pursuit of understanding, and the sanctuary this place offered amidst the chaos of university life. It’s a reminder that even in the most challenging times, there’s a steadfast place where minds are forged, and futures are shaped. This photo, for me, is a tribute to the enduring spirit of learning that defines JKUAT, and the silent, unwavering presence of our library, a true sanctuary for every student on their academic journey. It's a snapshot of resilience, a testament to the power of education, and a personal reflection on the path I, and so many others, walk within these walls.
