About Collins Muteti's work:
Photo Theme:
This photo centers on coastal women entrepreneurs and beneficiaries of the Kenya Marine Fisheries and Socio-Economic Development (KEMFSED) project, capturing a proudly smiling woman alongside a fellow community member holding a handcrafted Swahili-branded fan behind a display of artisanal goods. Positioned in front of official KEMFSED banners that highlight pillars of marine governance, inclusive growth, and transformed livelihoods, the image visually connects policy to human impact by showcasing women’s empowerment, dignity, and active leadership within the local Blue Economy.
Photo Story:
JIPE MOYO TUISHI

Historically, the coastal marine and fisheries sector in Kenya has been male-dominated, leaving women predominantly in low-income, informal roles—such as small-scale fish vending (mama karanga) or local handicraft making—with minimal access to credit, modern gear, or decision-making platforms.

The KEMFSED Project—implemented by the Government of Kenya through the State Department for Blue Economy and Fisheries with World Bank support—was designed to change this narrative. It provides direct grants, capacity building, equipment, and financial inclusion to coastal community groups, placing a strong emphasis on empowering women and youth across coastal counties.

This image captures the tangible impact of those efforts during the 11th Our Ocean Conference exhibition and conference. It highlights women transitioning from marginal roles to becoming prominent entrepreneurs, leaders, and decision-makers in their local Blue Economy.

What Inspired This Photo
Genuine Joy & Pride: Capturing the authentic warmth and pride in the central figure’s smile, reflecting self-reliance and dignity achieved through economic empowerment.

Local Craftsmanship & Livelihoods: Showcasing the artisanal products (woven baskets, mats, and fans) that represent sustainable, eco-friendly livelihood diversification for coastal households.

Connecting Policy to People: Juxtaposing the formal policy statements on the backdrop banners with the living human faces directly impacted by those policies.
How long has Collins Muteti loved photography:
Over 3 years
How they discovered their passion for photography:
I discovered my passion for photography in 2025, as an Intern (Public Communication - State Department for Blue Economy & Fisheries)through my love for capturing moments telling stories, and preserving memories through images. Over time, as I explored photography and covered events, I realised how powerful visual storytelling can be in communicating emotions, inspiring people (especially the youth & women), and documenting meaningful experiences.
